Usher's Philosophy


Usher On . . . Work
"Imagine working in a studio till 4 o'clock every morning. You sit on a couch and waste energy. You eat a million and one things. So we built a gym in the studio, where I go pump some iron with Cliff [Boyce, his trainer]. Everyone looks at us like we're crazy, but when I go back into that booth, I'm pumped."

Usher On . . . Stress Relief
"My life is work, work, work, work, work. So, naturally I have to have some moment for myself at the end of the day. Most of the time, I'll add a workout because it's something I want to do for myself physically, or I'll go and read a book, meditate, or whatever it may be, just to keep myself sane."

Usher On . . . Health
"At the age of 18 or 19, I broke down a lot. I'd get colds, catch the flu, 'cause I just wasn't taking care of my body. I wasn't eating right. I wasn't taking vitamins. I wasn't sleeping, which I still don't do. That's part of my problem--not resting."

"If you take care of your body, it'll take care of you. The benefit obviously is that I'm protecting my body from being harmed. I did my best to prepare and condition my body over time. Here are some exercises he does. Sitting toe-to-toe with a partner, legs spread in Vs, launching that exercise ball at each other. When one catches it, he lowers his back to the floor, then fires back up to a sitting position and returns the throw. Brutal. "Watch your breathing," warns Usher. "When it's burning, you can't give up. You don't pay attention to pain. Just breathe through it. This is no cookie diet!"

He continues with some wild moves, including a snakelike variation of the pushup. What is that, you say? Usher's legs are straight and spread wide, hips high, forehead hovering just above the floor. He swoops down so his body is flat and just above the floor, then comes up into a cobra, all in a fluid motion. Not only does it look cool, it works almost every muscle in his remarkable body. He also does an intense 5-minute circuit of Arnold presses, V presses, modified lateral raises, and pushups -- all part of a routine he's using to build a back as ripped as his trademark abs. He stretches for 10 minutes before and after every workout and employs a combination of Pilates, yoga, and massage to loosen himself up for dance moves. What about the Abs?
And for his abs.... he eats. But no remarkable diet tips.
"If you eat clean, you get better results," he says and you can rest assured he knows a thing or two about a healthy diet plan. Diet and exercise, that is always the secret.

Usher is dialed in --his trainer, Cliff Boyce, constantly advises him on how to achieve the body a millennial music star requires, while keeping a healthy lifestyle even at a quick pace. Here's how a combination of his work out combined with the best elements of Pistons player Ben Wallace, actor/adventurer/seducer-of-fine-women Matthew McConaughey, and six-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong would look like, if just a little bit of advice from Mark Verstegen on how to add strenght and conditioning to the plan, is added. Under the eye of his trainer, Cliff Boyce, Usher combines moves for body, mind, and voice. Here's a typical workout:

Meditation and visualization: 20 minutes

Static stretching: 10 to 15 minutes

Intervals: 30 minutes on a treadmill or bike

Strength: 60 minutes of supersets and circuits

Abs: 10-minute circuit

Static stretching: 10 to 15 minutes

Steam-room intervals: 5 minutes in steam, 5 minutes in a cold shower, 5 minutes in steam (The contrast of hot and cold stimulates bloodflow to help his muscles recover; the steam keeps his voice smooth and his skin toned.)

Start your day by eating one piece of fruit with breakfast (this is a simple way to boost your calories). An organic apple is my favorite, but any will work. This step helps control the insulin, the fat-storing hormone.

3. Start with a Salad: One of the simplest ways to control your hunger is to eat a salad before your meals. This is especially effective at night when most people want to pig out. You’ll eat less, and feel satisfied, because it takes time to chew, and it allows for your brain to process feedback information about satiety. Research has demonstrated that those who eat a salad before a meal end up eating fewer calories before they feel full.

4. Stay Hydrated: Water is essential to metabolic processes. Research indicates that those who drink more water burn more calories. Your urine should always be clear. If it’s not, you need to drink more water. A good trick is to drink 2-3 glasses of water as soon as you wake up. This jumpstarts your hydration for the day. Simply find time on the weekend for another hour, and throw a few 20-30 minute workouts into your week and you’re good to go.

Here’s a simple solution for an extra few workouts: two days each week go to bed 30 minutes earlier and wake up 30 minutes earlier. Spend that extra 30 minutes in the morning doing some sort of exercise that gets you sweating.

As a rule of thumb, it’s recommended to break up the five hours into three hours of resistance training and two hours of energy systems training. For the energy systems work, you don’t need to run on a treadmill, and you definitely shouldn’t sit on an exercise bike. Perform fun, challenging activities that require you to constantly move in different directions. Soccer, basketball, volleyball, tennis, racquetball, etc. are all excellent options.

"I do a lot of Pilates, kick boxing and weight training in L.A. and when I'm in Austin I run or ride a bike," says Bullock who splits her time between L.A. and her Texas Ranch. The lovely comedic actress doesn't shy away from variety; she mixes up her fitness routine. The variety of fitness activities helps Sandra stay motivated and keeps workout boredom at bay.Bullock's L.A.-based trainer, Eden Paul, trained with Bullock 3-4 days a week to prepare her for The Proposal. "She wanted to emulate her character and look buff and smashing in suits," Paul says. Sandra, who will turn 45 this year (!), looks more amazing than ever. This just makes us want to adopt her work hard, play hard routine. "We love to incorporate plyometrics, weights, Pilates and boxing. " Bullock says the variety keeps her workout regime fresh and helps her maintain motivation to stay healthy and fit, but don't think that's her only incentive. "People ask, 'How do actresses do it?' Um, they pay us to do this in order to look good on film."

Work your whole body with a 35 minute circuit. It is recommended that you warm up for 4 to 5 minutes on the treadmill before doing this workout:

• Alternate three sets of 20 standing squats with three sets of push ups (as many as you can do in good form).

• Alternate three sets of 20 reverse lunges with three sets of 15 dumbbell dead lifts (Squat with dumbbells in each hand. Make sure your back is flat and knees don't reach past your toes).

• Alternate three sets of 15 side lunges (alternate sides) with three sets of 20 dumbbell bicep curls to shoulder press (with palms up curl dumbbells into your chest keeping your elbows close to your sides, press dumbbells up, bring your arms back down, reverse curl and repeat).

• Lie face up in a crunch position (legs in the air, spine flat on the ground) and scissor kick the legs for as many seconds as you can in good form. Rest and repeat three times.

The Diet:


Sandra uses some easy diet plans that anyone can do. “Last night I had brown rice and black beans and some steamed vegetables so today I’m going to have all kinds of good stuff! I love sweets, like Viennese pastry, raw cookie dough, or a nice bowl of Lucky Charms with milk that I eat in bed watching SNL. That’s heaven right there,” says Sandra, who balances her healthy diet with one “cheat day” each week- from Friday night to Saturday night.

"So when I say whole body circuit training, I like to incorporate movements that really stress the largest muscles of the body. For example, we might do a set of squats (or leg presses), immediately followed by a set of pull-ups, or rows, and alternate back and forth for 3-4 sets. No rest between sets. Then rest 30-60 seconds, hit the chest with some dips, pushups, or bench, followed immediately by jumping lunges done with an overhead press." (holding dumbbells).

According to kickfitsports.com, this mini-circuit makes your workout time fun and efficient by combining movements that raise your heart rate and target your shoulders, abdominals, buttocks, and thigh muscles all at once. With some of the exercises, don't be surprised if one side of your body is more difficult to train than the other side. We all have a more dominant side, but it is important to train them equally. Keep it up and you will develop balanced symmetry and stand tall with a strong sculpted sleek physique!

Exercise Routine


Before beginning this routine, warm up with something as simple as walking on a treadmill, cycling, or a brisk walk around the block. It should take about 8-10 minutes to slowly raise your core temperature and prepare your body for the workout.

Each exercise should take about 1 ½ minutes with 15 seconds to set up for the next exercise. Focus on great form while you do as many repetitions as noted. As you get stronger, progress by cycling through the circuit twice and then three times, for a more advanced level.

1. Crunches on the Stability Ball – Abdominals

A. Lie your back and buttocks on a firm stability ball with your feet flat on the floor and knees bent. Place your hands behind your head to avoid using your neck muscles.

B. On an exhalation, contract your abdominal muscles, bend forward at the waist, and roll your head, shoulders, and upper back off the ball. Be sure to pay special attention to “closing” the rib cage and compressing your back into the ball. Do 12 repetitions.

paula_abdul_22. Plank - Chest, Shoulders, Abdominals, & Quadriceps

A. Start by laying face down on the ground. Place your elbows directly below your shoulders, with forearms parallel to each other and the palms of your hand facing the floor. Curl your toes under and bend your knees.

B. Contract your abdominal muscles, straighten your knees, and balance on your toes and forearms. Maintain a strong center to avoid over-arching your lower back and sagging at your waist. Keep the hips at shoulder level and pull your abdominals in toward the spine. Maintain this position for 30 seconds, then bend your knees and lower your hips to the floor.
3. Knee Push Ups - Chest, Triceps, & Shoulders

A. Begin by kneeling with your knees hip-width apart. Place your hands on the floor shoulder-width apart with your fingers pointing forward. Pull the abdominals in toward your spine.

B. Keep your torso in a straight line and lower yourself toward the floor until your elbows are bent about 90-degrees. (You don’t need to touch your chest to the floor.) Contract your chest and push yourself back up. Check that you are pressing evenly over the palms of your hands. Avoid rolling to the outer edge of your hands. Keep your hips down and lift your belly up to prevent overarching your lower back. Do 12-16 repetitions.
4. Weighted “Figure 8” - Shoulders & Abdominals

A. Start from a seated position, legs bent at a 90-degree angle. Hold a 5 lb., dumbbell or medicine ball above the head with both hands. Roll back halfway or until you feel your abdominal muscles tighten. As you hold this position, focus on slowly and deliberately squeezing all muscles from the chest to pubic bone.

B. Begin to make “Figure 8” movements with both hands holding the weight. Work across the body from right to left. Continue until you have completed ten (10) “Figure 8” motions. Then, roll up and return to the start position. Do 3 repetitions.
5. Rotational Squat - Quadriceps, Buttocks, & Shoulders

A. Stand with your legs shoulder-width apart and your toes facing forward. Hold a 5 lb., dumbbell or medicine ball in front of your chest. Bend your knees into a squat and rotate your upper body to the right. Keep both arms straight and your hips and knees facing front.

B. Shift your weight to your left leg, straightening it as you lift your right knee in front of you. Simultaneously, rotate your torso to the center and raise your arms above your head. Remember to keep your arms straight throughout the entire movement. Step down and repeat the squat, rotating to your right for 8 repetitions. Switch legs and repeat on the other side.
6. Rear Lunge with Knee Lift Balance - Quadriceps, Hamstrings, Buttocks, Abdominals, & Shoulders

A. Begin by standing with feet together and hands at your sides. Lunge back with your left leg, bending both knees to 90-degrees. Make sure your right knee is directly above your right ankle. Straighten and raise both arms overhead, palms facing inward with your biceps near your ears. Pause for 2 seconds, pulling in your abdominal muscles to support an upright spine.

B. Simultaneously, push off with your rear left leg. Straighten and balance on your right leg with your left knee bent in front of you. Open and lower your arms to the side at shoulder height. Hold for 3-4 seconds. Circle your arms down and return to the start position. Do 8-12 repetitions. Switch legs and repeat.

Complete this circuit one (1) time if you are a beginner, two (2) times if you are at an intermediate level of fitness, and three (3) times if you are advanced as stated in www.howcelebritiesloseweight.com
Remember to always cool down before you finish this workout. You can do this by standing with your feet shoulder-width apart, raise your arms overhead and lean your upper body to the left as far as you can while still breathing comfortably. Return to center and lean to your right side. Return to center, lower your arms to your sides, and roll your shoulders in a circle, then reverse. Finish by placing your hands at your hips and hinging forward with a straight back to stretch the backs of your legs and hips. Be sure to breathe fully and deeply throughout all of these cool down movements.

'Channing was in decent shape when I started working with him but like a lot of guys, he likes to eat fast food and sink a few drinks,' says William J Harris, the New York-based personal trainer.

Bulking up, however, wasn’t on the agenda. ‘Channing didn't need to get bigger,’ says Harris. ‘In fact, we wanted him to shed some weight to make him look more agile, more like a fighter. The program I devised help him shift about 30 pounds in the three weeks before filming started.’

But rocking up to the set looking like a bodybuilder wouldn’t work either. ‘He needed to have strength, flexibility and endurance so I came up with a routine of rope turns and calisthenic bodyweight exercises, such as jumping jacks, burpees, press-ups, pull-ups and squats, to help him build that. I also threw in some classic compound moves using barbells and kettlebells.’

Exercise Routine


Tatum was given three exercises to perform each session and had to complete as many 'rounds' as he could within 20 minutes. 'Working out at a high intensity keeps the heart pumping and burns more calories,' says Harris. 'For the main barbell lifts, such as deadlifts, military presses, squats and clean and jerks, we found a weight Channing could lift quickly and comfortably ten times while maintaining perfect form.’

‘We changed what we did every session to keep his mind engaged and his body guessing,’ Harris says. 'I put him through a three-day-on, one-day-off routine and kept workouts to just 30 minutes. If you keep the intensity high you don't need to train for any longer than that.'

If you're more concerned with putting on muscle than burning fat, add more weight to these lifts and focus on completing four rounds in the session, rather than as many as you can in 20 minutes as stated in www.howcelebritiesloseweight.com

Day One
Warm-up – Five-minute jog.
Main workout – 20 minutes to do as many rounds as possible of 100 rope skips, 10 pull-ups and five clean and jerks.
Cool down – Five-minute light jog and stretching.

Warm-up – Five-minutes of skipping.
Main workout – 20 minutes to do as many rounds as possible of 20 burpees, 15 hanging leg raises and 20 bodyweight squats.
Cool down – Five minutes of skipping and stretching.

Day Three
Warm-up – Five minutes of skipping.
Main workout – 20 minutes to do as many rounds as possible of 400m sprints, 10 kettlebell swings and 10 press-ups.
Cool down – Five-minute light jog and stretching.

Day Four
Rest day before starting the routine again. To avoid getting bored during the following weeks, mix up the exercises from different sessions or include some of the additional ones listed below, but leave at least one day's rest between exercises that work the same muscle groups.

Other exercises to do:
25 burpees
75 press-ups
50 sit-ups
25 box jumps
Five deadlifts
50 walking lunges
20 jumping jacks
Five military press
10 bench press

Diet is just as important


Exercise is not enough though to get these kind of results. Having a healthy diet to go with it will get you these results.

Tatum's daily diet
Harris was responsible for Tatum’s diet, too. 'Just as exercise is all about intensity, food is all about quality,’ says Harris. ‘So we swapped the unhealthy ingredients in the food Channing likes for healthy ones – we gave him lean turkey rather than beef, for example, and swapped takeaway pizzas for homemade wholewheat ones topped with organic veggies. Processed and frozen foods, salt, sugar and alcohol were all no-nos.’
Here is an example of a typical days diet:

Breakfast: Omelette with veg, wholewheat toast and an orange.
Snack: Apple and unsalted nuts.
Lunch: Grilled chicken breasts, spinach and sweet potato.
Snack: Cottage cheese and mixed nuts.
Dinner: Turkey burger with mixed veg.
Snack: Yoghurt and a handful of almonds.
